The pilot jets needed to be replaced/carbs cleaned out/new plugs/new fully charged battery and fresh fuel is what it took. It now runs perfectly!
Also, it should fire in less than 10 seconds. If not, you could burn up your starter if you keep the switch in to long.

June 11, 2012 at 3:17 am #647#1 FZParticipantDitto on what Graham said… today I pulled my carbs and the pilot jets were plugged. It ran on choke only and would not rev (old gas). Now with new plugs/clean carbs and fresh fuel it revs great but doesnt idle perfectly off choke. I am going to have the carbs checked again by a cycle mechanic friend of mine to verify that I didn’t miss anything….my bike sat for quite a while contributing to my dilemma.
June 11, 2012 at 3:08 am #646#1 FZParticipantSorry Scott for the delay…I have a pic of the side of my V&H exhaust can…not a full side shot of the bike though. Let me know if you need a better or more complete one to view.
June 11, 2012 at 2:51 am #645#1 FZParticipantThanks ashley for your info. The frame # is on the front upper portion of the frame in front of the gas tank just below the handle bars on the Right side.

1FT-000136June 10, 2012 at 2:00 am #643#1 FZParticipantI put a Vance & Hines SS2R exhaust header and did the Dynojet carb kit with the separate air filters on the carbs. The sound it makes through the separate air filters sounds better than the noise from the header!
Overall performance gain was noticable in 1/4 mile times and speed. Prior to installing the performance parts my times/speeds were in the 12.2-12.3seconds/111-112mph range.
After the above parts were installed, my best time was 11.62/115mph with consistent times in the 11.7 range. I had also removed the mirrors which made about a .1 difference from what I could tell. My driving also improved so I would guess a bit of the gain woud have come from there as well.
My bike is streetable and my performance increases were decent but worked well for my application.
Good luck on your performance quest!
June 6, 2012 at 2:24 am #636#1 FZParticipantThis is my FZ that I bought new in July of 1985. It has 13,900 miles and the only mods to the bike are the Vance & Hines SS2R exhaust and K & N carb kit. Rear footpegs have been removed and I bought the factory rear seat cowl when I purchased the bike new.
I still have the original airbox and rear footpegs, however the original exhaust is long gone. I am planning to get it out for some rides this summer for the first time in several years….time to clean out the carbs I guess 🙂
